Caught in the Act

Performance takes a thousand forms in New York City. A ballerina mid-leap. A drag performer commanding a room. A Broadway veteran doing what they've spent a lifetime perfecting. A teenager at the High School of Performing Arts discovering for the first time what their body can do on a stage.

What they all share is the moment — that singular, unrepeatable instant when training and passion and nerves and joy all converge in front of an audience. Performance photography is about being ready for that moment before it happens, and having the instinct to find it in the chaos of a live show.

I've spent years photographing New York City's performing arts community — from major productions to underground showcases, from concert halls to cabaret stages. Whatever the form, whatever the venue, my job is the same: to stop time at exactly the right moment.
